Dear Parents/Guardians,
My name is Vanessa Connearney and I am the school counselor in your child's school. Many of you may not have had a counselor when you were in elementary school. For those of you who did, there is a good possibility that the school counselors have different functions than they did ten or twenty years ago.
First and foremost, it is my responsibility to help your child get the best possible education. A good education includes not only learning to read, write, and do math, but also learning good social skills. This means, among other things, learning how to get along with other children, making good choices, controlling anger, accepting responsibility, and being aware of strengths and weaknesses. Many of these skills are taught at home, and it is my intent to supplement learning that takes place at home with small group and classroom guidance lessons.
I am also in the building to help students who are facing particular difficulties. For example, family disruptions like illness, death or divorce that could very well affect children at school. If your family is experiencing anything out of the ordinary, please don't hesitate to contact me. If I am aware of any special problems that your child may be facing, I can observe and help with any difficulties that may surface.
One of my major functions is to be of help to the parents. If you have a particular concern about your child, I welcome the opportunity to meet and discuss this matter together.
It is important to remember that school staff and parents working together is a winning combination for children. All students deserve to be winners, and together we can help your child realize this goal.
If I can be of any help, please call (856) 461-1255 ext. 1138. If I am not available, please leave a message and I will return your call as soon as possible.
Yours Truly,
Vanessa Connearney
Elementary School Counselor
