The visual arts is a wonderful tool to enhance
development and growth. It enables personal, intellectual, and social
development for each individual. It provides the ability to be creative and
inventive decision makers. It provides an environment that fosters leadership
skills and encourages teamwork. It helps to build self esteem and confidence to
tackle new tasks. All in all it provides an enriched quality of life. The
Elementary Art Program will include various lessons that incorporate the
following objectives:
1.Art
Literacy: Knowledge of the elements and principles
of art.
This objective teaches students the language and
terminology of art, as well as the basic elements (line, shape,
texture, color, form, value and space) and principles (repetition,
balance, emphasis, contrast, pattern and unity).
2.Making
Connections: The integration of visual arts with other subject areas,
times and cultures
This objective relates the visual arts to other
curricular areas (e.g., fine arts, language arts, science, mathematics,
technology and social studies). The integration of art with other subjects
helps children make connections among the concepts taught in all curricular
areas. For example, these connections give students a vision of societies,
cultural norms, traditions, and customs which provides them with rich
connections to their heritage and helps them to understand the purpose of art
in all cultures and disciplines.
3.Art
as Visual Language: Analyzing and appreciating art
This objective helps
students become informed viewers by understanding and appreciating the how and
why of art, then use that knowledge to relate art to their world.
4.Production:
Opportunities
for students to use a variety of media, techniques and processes to produce art
This objective instructs students in the use of
materials and the proper handling of the tools used in producing art.
5.Art
as Expression of Ideas: The communication of visual imagery and its meaning in
artwork
Artwork often tells a story or communicates ideas and
feelings. This objective teaches children to use visual imagery (images,
symbols, and objects) to communicate through their artwork.
